Named after Goddess Mookambika the presiding deity of the famous Mookambika Temple at Kollur, in Udupi district, Coastal Karnataka, which is located at the heart of the Sanctuary. Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary spans over 370.37 sq km and is thick with evergreen, semi-evergreen and moist deciduous forests of the Western Ghats, and small patches of teak plantations. Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary forms a vital connecting link between Someshwara Wildlife Sanctuary located on the southern side and Sharavathi Wildlife Sanctuary located on the northern side.

Best season to visit Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary

During the monsoon, these forests experience heavy rains. During this season one can encounter plenty of leeches and hence  not the best time to visit the park. Post monsoon season, September to April will be the best time.

How to reach Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary:

Kollur town is the gateway to enter Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary. Kollur is 430 kms from Bengaluru and 130 kms from Mangaluru. Mangaluru is the nearest airport. Mookambika Road railway station at Baindur is the nearest railway station 30 kms from Kollur. Regular private bus services are available to reach Kollur from Mangaluru city. Taxis can also be booked from nearby towns such as Kundapura (36 kms) to reach Kollur.

Places to visit near Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary:

KSTDC manages Paradise Wild Hills Resort 23 kms from Kollur. The state-run Jungle Lodges and Resorts operate the Anejhari Butterfly Camp which is located inside the sanctuary. Sri Mookambika Temple management runs a guest house at affordable rates. Multiple budget hotels are available in Kollur. More hotel options are available in nearby Kundapura (36 kms) or Baindur (28kms).
