Someshwara Wildlife Sanctuary

Someshwara Wildlife Sanctuary has been named after Lord “Someshwara” the presiding deity of the famous Someshwara Temple located within the limits of the sanctuary. It is situated in Karkala and Kundhapur Taluk of Udupi. With an area of about 314.25 sq. km., The Wildlife Sanctuary has semi-evergreen and evergreen forests. The Kudremukh National Park lies to the Southeast of this sanctuary. The Agumbe Ghat located inside this sanctuary receives an average rainfall of about 8000 mm and thus called “Cherrapunji‎ of South India”.

Reasons to visit

  • Possible animal sightings: Jackal, Wild Boar, Spotted deer, Gaur, Wild Dogs, monkeys, and langurs, etc.
  • Possible bird sightings: Macaque, Squirrels, hornbills.
  • Reptiles and night animals: This park is rich in various forms of biodiversity
  • Waterfalls and River Bathing: Seethanadi has several ideal spots to take a bath. Several waterfalls are accessible by vehicle and trekking in and around Agumbe- Jogi Gundi waterfalls, Onake Abbi Falls, Barkana Falls, Koodlu Theertha Falls, etc.
  • Agumbe sunset viewpoint

Someshwara Wildlife Sanctuary receives one of the highest rainfalls in Karnataka. Exploring the dense rainforests of Someshwara without an expert guide is not advised. No jeep safaris are available in Someshwara Wildlife Sanctuary. Jungle Lodges & Resorts Ltd. Seethanadi Nature camp organizes guided trekking, bird watching, and other activities. Few private companies organize guided tours to Agumbe. The local forest department office can provide necessary information/assistance.
