Srirangapatna

Srirangapatna known to be the historical capital of warrior kings Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan, is a town of Mandya district, a highly sought after destination in Karnataka for it’s magnificent temples and monumental forts. Located 16 kilometers from the beautiful city Mysore, this place is recognized for its rich cultural heritage. History has it that the forts hold stories of famous battles and also portrays Tipu Sultan’s history as a ruler. Tipu built palaces and forts so as to hold proof of him as a legend and powerful, undefeatable war hero.

Not many realize that Srirangapatna is actually an island surrounded by river Cauvery from all sides. This egg-shaped island is named after Sri Ranganatha, the presiding deity of the Sri Ranganatha Swamy temple.

Sri Ranganatha Swamy temple, Nimishamba Temple at Ganjam, the summer palace Daria Dowlat built by Tipu Sultan to commemorate the victory of his second Mysuru war against the English, Tipu’s museum that consists of all his belongings like his sword, his clothing, etc, Gumbaz-the house his parents lived in, Jamia Masjid- the mosque built by Tipu Sultan are just some of the places of the many you may visit. The architecture in every inch of the city is so beautiful and so unique.

Srirangapatna is not only the base for powerful empires of Gangas, Vijayanagara viceroys and Mysore kings but also, the detailed history and life of Tipu Sultan completely through his architecture, forts, temples, etc.


Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple:

The temple that is dedicated to the Hindu God Ranganatha is situated in Mandya district of Karnataka along the banks of river Kaveri. The temple is one of the five sacred sites that is otherwise known as Pancharanga Kshetrams (5 Temples). The temple is considered a monument of national importance.


Dariya Daulat Palace:

The summer palace Dariya Dowlat built by Tipu Sultan was to commemorate the victory of his second Mysore war against the English. This palace is now considered a museum that consists of all Tipu’s belongings like his sword, his clothing, his footwear and so on. It is surrounded by a beautiful garden area, adding more beauty to the palace.


Balmuri Falls:

This captivating falls surrounded by the serenity of nature and greenery is one of the common location chosen for various Kannada film shoots. The waterfall is also a famous and perfect picnic spot for many tourists who want to sit and enjoy some time away from the noise of the city. October to November would be the ideal time to visit the falls when you will be able to witness a large amount of water gushing down the rocks.


Nimishamba Temple:

Located near the River Cauvery is the 300 years old Nimishamba Temple. This presiding deity of this temple is Goddess Parvati and is one of the most important places in Srirangapatna.


Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary:

If you are into bird watching, this bird sanctuary is the perfect location for you. This sanctuary is named after the God Sri Ranganathaswamy and is home to many exquisite birds. The entire area is a serene environment spread across to attract more birds and give them a beautiful environment to move around freely. You can also go boating within the sanctuary and witness many bamboo trees and various unique species of Flora and Fauna within this bird lover’s paradise.
